Other Factors

Your Employment Position

Becoming a foster carer doesn’t mean you become an employee of The Fostering Foundation; you will be self-employed. We have details of a firm of Chartered Accountants who provide discounted accountancy services and are used to preparing accounts for foster carers. There have been changes in the tax regulations that apply to the allowance paid to foster carers, which mean that you may pay little or no tax on the allowance you receive for foster care.

Insurance

Carers will have the benefit of comprehensive all-risks insurance cover arranged by The Fostering Foundation with a recognised insurance company through an arrangement with The Fostering Network. The Fostering Network is an independent national organisation which supports, advocates and lobbies on behalf of foster carers.

Your insurance covers you against willful damage to property by a child or his/her birth parents as well as public liability and personal accident cover. This cover is, however, not a substitute for a carer’s own household insurance and only applies in circumstances where your existing insurance arrangements do not cover these types of event.

You must always notify your own household and motor insurers that you are a foster carer and will be looking after children.
